The Annual Talent Award won by recently qualified architect from the School of Architecture
| Dato: | 15.04.11 |
On Friday 15 April, the Danish Minister of Culture, Mr Per Stig Møller, presented the Annual Talent Award to Signe Vest, who recently qualified as an architect from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture. She won the award for her graduation project, ‘A Boxing Club at Nørrebro’.
Signe Vest's graduation project takes its starting point in the many new user groups who have engaged in boxing in recent years. Boxing has become a sport for everybody, and it is therefore necessary to think innovatively when designing facilities for an amateur boxing club. The club needs to be more and something other than a raw training facility; it should also be a space for local community life / socialising across very different user groups: Young people with different ethnic backgrounds; women or recreational athletes who have grown tired of dull fitness centres and who work out without any intention of participating in boxing matches.
In terms of design, Signe Vest has based her project on the boxer who turns around his own axis in order to get around his opponent. This has inspired a project in which the arena serves as a centre of rotation that controls the interior movement course of the house.
The Annual Talent Award is awarded among graduation projects from Denmark's four architectural and design programmes, where focus has been on sports and movement. The award is to motivate even more architecture and design students to take an interest in buildings and outdoor facilities for sports.
All of the selected graduation projects can be seen at the exhibition Reborn for Culture and Movement at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture. The exhibition has been organised by Centre for Sports and Architecture. Reborn for Culture and Movement can be experienced from 16 April to 15 May 2011 at the following address: Danneskiold-Samsøes Allé 51, 1435 Copenhagen. Entrance is free of charge all weekdays from 11 am to 8 pm, and during weekends from 12 noon to 6 pm.
At the presentation of the Annual Talent Award, the Architecture in Sports Award is also presented. This year, the Award went to Dorte Mandrup Architects.
