7 million from the EU for research at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture

The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, together with the University of Lund, have been granted DKK 7 million by the EU Regional Pool “Interreg” for “Sound Settlement”, a cross-disciplinary research project on sustainable construction in the Øresund region. 

The project is intended to result in concrete proposals for how municipalities may tackle future climate challenges by means of sustainable architecture and building planning, and thus will serve to provide municipalities with a basis for addressing this increasingly more pressing task. 

Based on analyses of select best practice examples from Danish and Swedish municipalities, including Albertslund, Hillerød, Malmø, Helsingborg and Lund, which will be compared to international pioneer projects, the goal is to develop a “knowledge bank”, of which the municipalities within the region – and other parts of Denmark and Sweden – may reap the benefits. 

The research project will also examine how citizens may be included in municipal decision-making processes, and how municipalities handle sustainable urban planning from a political and administrative point of view. 

The project’s cross-disciplinary knowledge also draws on a wide area of research from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, Lund University, Malmø University, the Danish Building Research Institute and Aalborg University. The intention is to communicate the knowledge, which is gathered during the course of the project, by means of external seminars at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, which will be open to anyone interested, including a variety of workshops, websites and status reports.
