A park that incorporates change
Laid out as an extension of the Chang'an axis, the park is shaped by my studies into the morphology of the site and its periurban context. The park interprets the transformations that take place in its surroundings into a play between a controlled formal transformation and a 'cultivation' of existing, informal transformations through the assemblage of generic components. I have designed the park in six phases, from the point of departure of an industrial landscape through a process of soil remediation to the final stage of an agricultural landscape. The park is made up of a series of interrelating elements, some of which are new, and some of which are transformations of existing structures:
The Fields make up the productive layer of the park. Because of the pollution on the site, the soil is unsuitable for agriculture from the initial stage. By specifying plants that extract the polluting chemicals and heavy metals from the soil, the fields become productive in the sense of preparing the ground for agricultural use. During this process, they are an intricate landscape for recreational use. To optimize their efficiency, the crops are rotated in cycles of 1-3 years, allowing the form and composition of the fields to change continuously
The Module is a generic building element, a steel frame that is assembled and stacked to become towers, raised with even increment along the axis. They are points of orientation for the park visitors, as well as an invitation to experience the fields from above. The same module is used to build kiosks, park pavilions, service buildings and market stands. This generic component becomes a complement to the specificity of the fields, capable of emerging and disappearing with changing needs.
The large Hall intersecting the axis is transformed into a greenhouse by exchanging its steel plate envelope with glass. Inside, the greenhouse is populated by vertical fields, which are stacked hydroponic beds with edible plants and vegetables. The horizontal fields continue into the hall along the axis, visually connecting the East side of the park with gasometer and village to the West. During phase III (2012), the hall is 'penetrated' by three microclimatic cones where plants from other climatic zones can be grown, much like in a botanical garden.
The Gasometer is opened up and reprogrammed into a market where the crops produced in the park are sold. Inside, the steel modules become market stands and in the middle, a plaza provides an event space and meeting place for the local residents. The light membrane hanging from the structure helps breaking down the large volume and signifies its new informal character.
The Village becomes the residential area for the park workers and farmers. Its existing structure is enforced through a legal division into plots, allowing the residents to rebuild and improve existing houses without the risk of sudden eviction. A new building code regulates the construction, allowing the village to grow within its current boundaries up to 3 stories.
The Riverbed is maintained as grassland with its existing small streams and water accumulations. A pair of new bridges gives access to the riverbed, allowing visitors to discover the natural vegetation along dedicated paths, but without compromising its status as bird habitat. On the West side of the riverbed, a 60 m tall tower marks the park's final element, bringing the full axis into view from its summit.
