Reworking Architecture

Date: 24.11.09 - 08.01.10

A seminar on sustainable tectonics

”Patch-work”
Will investigate architectural creation as a combination of independent systems. Based on the theories of the architects Kieran/Timberlake, where the contemporary architectural object is seen as constructed of individually optimised systems, “quilting”, we discuss the notion of the well-defi ned interface as a platform for sub-supplier-innovation and resource-optimization.

”Trash-work”
Questions the common practice of architectural design, which seeks processes and materials that can fulfi l or adapt to the architectural vision. Turning this strategy upside-down, we discuss what happens if the visions instead were created based on what is available after the disassembly of existing constructions. Databases listing recycled materials and components exist on a local scale, but more global networks of recycled material fl ows are imminent. Can we imagine a new practice, based on an ever–changing supply of salvaged building materials?

”Auto-work”
H
as automated building production as its startingpoint. Traditionally, construction incorporating craft-based processes means labour-intensive production, and in contemporary high-complexity construction a high number of involved companies. Parametric production and automated construction can (re)create a more directly linked connection between design and production and give architect and engineer new possibilities and control of individual solutions.

”Reworking Achitecture”,
